IES i.e. Indian engineering services, is a combined competitive examination. This exam is hosted by Union Public service commission (UPSC) with the sole purpose to select the deserving and qualified candidates. IES is one of the most sought after recruitment examination. Lakhs of students appear in this exam every year and that’s why it is considered as one of the toughest exams in the nation. The recruitment of the qualified candidates is generally made under the following categories:
- Civil Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering
As the competition is extreme, therefore, it is important to prepare for this exam well. This exam comprises of various subjects other than your core field and you have to prepare for the same so as to qualify this recruitment exam with good percentile.
Basically the paper comprises your core subject and general studies and engineering aptitude. After the addition of General studies, cracking this exam has become little tricky. Although this is non – technical subject but you have to prepare the same so as to qualify this exam. This general studies and engineering aptitude subject is added to determine the non – technical knowledge of the candidates and to check whether they are actually deserving or not. It is to be noted that the candidates need to score in both technical and non – technical exam so as to qualify the preliminary exam.
General Studies and Engineering Aptitude basically 10 further topics namely:
- Current Issues of national and international importance
This new pattern has really increase the importance of newspaper as now the candidates must have to aware themselves with the current issues of national and international importance, social, economic and industrial development. In short you have to know everything happening around the world. One can prepare this part by reading newspaper daily and by marking the important points so as to remind them later on.
- Engineering Aptitude
We all know that aptitude exams basically consist of logical and analytical reasoning. Well, this subject is not at all tough as reasoning is not a rocket science to understand. One has to prepare for the same on the regular basis so as to make strong command on this subject. This topic is added so as to judge the aptitude knowledge of the candidate.
- Engineering Mathematics and Numerical Analysis
Well, this is not a new subject for engineers as they have already studies engineering mathematic in their first and second semester. This part can be easily prepared by solving the questions from the books of your first year graduation. Look, this topic need to be prepared with extreme care as one wrong step and you’ll get the wrong answer. Prepare this as much as you can.
- General Principles of Design, drawing and importance of safety
Again, this subject is not new for civil and mechanical engineers as they have studied about design and drawing in their graduation. The students from other branches can take reference from their books and prepare as accordingly.
- Standards and Quality practices and production, construction, maintenance and services
As this section belongs from the domain of production therefore, civil engineers have some advantage over others but don’t worry as this section can be easily prepared by taking reference from the books and notes.
- Basics of energy and environment
This section includes the questions related to different types of energy and environment and civil engineers have already the same in their graduation so there is nothing new for them. But students from other streams will have to prepare for the same by taking reference from their books.
- Basics of project management
As the name implies, this topics is related to project management concerns which have already studied by mechanical and civil engineers in their graduation. The candidates belong from electrical and electronics can take reference from their book and prepare for the same as accordingly.
- Basic of material science and engineering
Material science is the subject that has studied by the engineers in their graduation so there will be no issue in preparing the same. However, it is advised to take reference from the books of mechanical engineering as it would be beneficial for all.
- Information and Communication Technology
This section is related to IT and computer science department and asks the question related to information and communication technology of the modern world.
- Ethics and Values in Engineering Profession
This is the most interesting addition to the syllabus that includes the conception questions about society.
